Artist Statement
Visually representing DeBoer's surroundings and the items he encounters in his daily life, this collection of objects invites its audience to draw on their own memories, relationships, and stories to find personal significance and cultural recognition. Pushing his technical skills to their limits, DeBoer renders familiar objects in porcelain, using exacting detail and realistic finishes to draw the viewer closer until their true substance is revealed through subtle hints. In this new body of work, DeBoer also applies his craftsmanship to media such as wood, marrying its rigid natural beauty with the sumptuous qualities of porcelain through sculptures approached as still life compositions. By pairing and stacking these painstakingly created objects, DeBoer begins to tell his own story of a place and time that can only reach so far, like a fuzzy memory or a distant mirage.
