Colin Holloway and Rich Cali · Nothing Nowhere · Compact Residency

COLIN HOLLOWAY AND RICH CALI · NOTHING NOWHERE

Opening reception Aug 10, 2024 | 6–10 pm
On view by appointment through Aug 25, 2024

Rich Cali and Colin Holloway present a new body of work bringing together their individual perspectives on the emotive potential and universal language of black and white. Both self-taught, they’ve cultivated distinct styles rooted in raw expression.

Holloway’s gestural paintings burst with dynamic energy and bold, fluid brushstrokes. Each piece is a snapshot of a fleeting moment, filled with movement and emotion. In contrast, Cali’s paintings and sculptures are slow and meditative. With layer upon layer of texture and pattern, they slowly draw the viewer in.

In their first show together — as old friends experimenting with and inspired by each other’s styles — a refreshing honesty comes through, unburdened by convention or expectation.

About Compact Residency

Compound’s first annual experiment with summer programming: shorter-format, less structured shows led by at least one desert-based artist. Colin Holloway’s work was featured in a solo show at Compound in Winter 2019-2020, and we’re thrilled for his return with this new collaboration.
