Originally from Newport Beach, CA, Michael Townsend started taking photographs after moving to New York City in his late twenties. He was drawn primarily to portraits and images of textures, graffiti, and nightlife. When he returned to Southern California in 2011, he began traveling up and down the West Coast, documenting coastal culture in and out of the water. In 2018, Michael co-founded Compound YV, an artist-run gallery in Yucca Valley, outside of Joshua Tree, CA. His work has been featured in Surfer’s Journal and Blue Magazine among other publications, and shown in galleries in France and Germany. "Dune (Falling)" is a portrait of painter and surfer Jesse Guglielmana taken in Baja California, MX.
