Joe Skoby

Deflated

Finding inspiration in the traditional Japanese ceramics craft, combined with the freedom to dive into the contemporary, the pieces embody an aesthetic where imperfections engender unique beauty. Textured with hand-carved patterns or smooth to the surface, Skoby’s ceramics abandon their function as vase and become sculptural elements in and of themselves. Glazes, in a balanced, varietal palette of colors, are overlapped, layered, dipped, brushed, or poured.

Simple yet profound, Skoby’s work looks beautiful paired in groups, harmoniously mirroring his own relationship with nature. Each vessel is hand-thrown and crafted in his studio in La Jolla, California. No two pieces are alike.

Bio

Joseph Skoby, of Southern California, makes work that is inspired by the nature of his native state. He creates ceramics in his own lush garden, recalling his intimate dance with the ocean as a lifelong surfer.
